The Washington Wizards need a couple of players to step up

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Need to step up, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 6 January 2010 at 8:42 pm

With Gilbert Arenas likely done for the season the Wizards need someone to step up at point guard. The thinking here is that Earl Boykins and Randy Foye will both get big bumps in playing time. Boykins has played in 24 games (0 starts) for the Wizards this season and he is averaging 19.0 minutes, 8.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He got the start tonight at the point. Randy Foye has played in 31 games (7 starts) for the Wizards this season and he is averaging 17.3 minutes, 7.3 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. Foye is much more talented than he has shown the Wizards so far this season so they need him to step up. If Foye can’t beat out Boykins for the starting job at some point this season the Wizards will have a huge bust on their hands.

Gilbert Arenas suspended indefinitely

NBA commissioner David Stern has suspended Washington Wizards’ guard Gilbert Arenas indefinitely without pay, after his recent idiotic incident in which he brandished four guns in the Washington Wizards’ locker room.  The incident occurred on December 21st with teammate Javaris Crittenton, two days after the two had a heated argument on the team plane over a gambling debt.  Arenas has really been downplaying the incident, saying it was a joke and it has been blown out of proportion.  Joke or no joke, guns are a serious concern and they are not allowed on league property and Arenas’ lack of seriousness regarding this situation has almost been as bad as the situation itself.  His behavior following it sealed his faith, with strange Twitter posts and the even dumber move of  pretending to “shoot” his fellow Wizards’ teammates with his finger during pre-game warm-ups last night in Philadelphia.  Usually the NBA likes to wait until the authorities finish their investigation, but Arenas’ actions gave Stern little choice but to suspend Arenas.  He has been sending a terrible message to NBA fans and it is the complete opposite of the image the NBA wants to present.  Arenas has so much talent, he really needs to get his mind right and grow up or he will never be a winner in this league.

What is Gilbert Arenas thinking?

Washington Wizards’ star guard Gilbert Arenas has said and done a lot of strange things in his NBA career, but most of them have been harmless.  The latest Arenas incident doesn’t seem very harmless this time, as it apparently involved Arenas and his Wizards’ teammate Javaris Crittenton pulling out guns in the Wizards’ locker room on December 21st.  The dispute started on a December 19th team flight home from Phoenix, where it has been reported that Arenas and Crittenton started arguing over a gambling debt of $25,000 that Arenas owed Crittenton.  With huge contracts and endorsements, combined with the downtime that comes with traveling, professional athletes have long been known to gamble for high stakes between one another.  If Arenas owed him that money, he and his $111 million contract should have just paid Crittenton.  Getting guns involved is absolutely ridiculous, especially between teammates.

Arenas isn’t the only one to blame, as Crittenton also had a gun.  These guys are supposed to be responsible grown men, but they obviously are not.  Arenas is supposed to be the leader of the Wizards though, as he is the franchise player, and he is apparently the reason the dispute started.  For those reasons, I put more of the blame on Arenas than Crittenton (although Crittenton’s has no excuse for his actions either).  Arenas could be facing some big consequences for his stupid actions, and not just from the NBA (firearms are not allowed on league property).  The local and federal law enforcement are investigating and some are saying the Wizards may use this incident to void the rest of Arenas huge contract and drop him from the team.  His numbers are solid, with averages of 22.7 points, 6.9 assists, and 4.3 rebounds, but he still is not the player he was before his two knee surgeries and the Wizards are a disappointing 10-20 this season.
