The Wizards select forward Dominic McGuire in the 2nd round

The Wizards felt they needed rebounding help and that was the reason for the selection of Dominic McGuire with the #47 pick in the NBA Draft.  McGuire played at both California and Frenso State in his college career.  He played in 86 college games and he averaged 8.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.9 blocked shots per game.  He’s not much of a shooter though as he hit 46.2% from the floor, 25.3% from the three point range and only 55.6% from the free throw line in college.  McGuire projects to be a backup in the pros.

The Washington Wizards select shooting guard Nick Young in the 1st round

With DeShawn Stevenson opting out of his contract the Wizards felt they needed a shooting guard so they drafted the best one on the board and that was Nick Young from USC.  Young has a good arsenal of moves and he’s a good shooter.  Young played in 96 games at USC and he averaged 15.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.7 steals per game.  Young shot 48.4% from the floor, 36.8% from three point range and 76.4% from the free throw line at USC.  He was a good pick for the Wizards as he will likely be a starter for a long time for them.

The Washington Wizards will have a lot of new faces in 2007

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 27 June 2007 at 10:38 pm

The Washington Wizards will have 7 free agents come July 1st and they should only think of retaining two of them.  DeShawn Stevenson and Jarvis Hayes should both get offers from the Wizards but both of them might find more money elsewhere.  Even if they leave the Wizards should have a good team again.  The Wizards should concentrate on drafting a couple of players that can play some defense because that’s one thing that they just can’t do.  The positions they should think about are point guard and center.  The Wizards have the #16 and #47 pick in this year’s draft.

DeShawn Stevenson is going to opt out of his contract with the Washington Wizards

Blogged under Bloglockers, Big Wizards News, Front Page by alleyoop on Monday 25 June 2007 at 10:54 pm

DeShawn Stevenson has decided to opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent starting on July 1st.  The Wizards would probably like him back but only at the right price.  Stevenson had his best year of his NBA career but it ended badly in the playoffs as he played awful against the Cavs.  Stevenson started all 82 games last season and he averaged 29.5 minutes, 11.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.  Stevenson also shot pretty well for the Wizards last season as he hit 46.1% from the floor, 40.4% from three point range and 70.4% from the free throw line.

DeShawn Stevenson increased his career averages across the board due to him having his best season ever.  Stevenson has now played in 467 games (302 starts) and he’s averaged 23.1 minutes, 8.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.  He saw all of his shooting percentages rise as he’s now hit 43.2% of his shots from the floor, 33% from the three point line and 69% from the free throw line.
